Sincerity
Text / Zhu He
The best artists of the Post-80s generation have their own outlook different from others, which is finally expressed in the form of visual art, and they can be called the New Visual Generation. Artists of Shi Xiang’s generation are not bound by traditional concepts and have a very strong enterprising spirit; moreover, they are willing to think about the history of their own country and nation, and do a lot of work to carry on the work of the past and the future. It is under such thinking that Shi Xiang uses charcoal and ink to reorganize the Chinese still life, which is a kind of non-Western glorification of materiality, but a poetic exploration of the soul of the still life in the East.
From Muxi, Qian Xuan to Qi Baishi, the neglected side of the everyday nature of still life of fruits and melons has been re-explored by artists. In Shi Xiang’s creations, he continues the previous Chinese artists’ thinking about still life, and minimizes the color, replacing it with a renewed perception of the object, and an understanding of the shape, volume, and even the essence of the object. This is the most touching aspect of Shi Xiang’s works, as he abandons all the interfering factors given by desire, and opens up a path to the object itself, which is often neglected by us, by repeating the lines in the most simple way similar to asceticism. At the same time, it should also be pointed out that Shi Xiang’s generation of artists is not only limited to their own families, nationalities and countries, but he and they can also expand their horizons to the whole world, and obtain the inheritance of the world’s civilization. What appears in their works is no longer the mainstream concept, but replacing the uniformity with the blossoms, and the rules and order can be broken in their opinion, and they can be established after being broken, and there is no doubt that in this generation, there is no doubt that they are the most important ones. In this generation, Shi Xiang is undoubtedly one of the most sincere artists.
