I asked DeepSeek what “Portrait Art” was.
DeepSeek told me: Portrait art is a form of art that centers on the human figure and captures an individual’s appearance, character, emotion, or social identity through visual means. It is not only an important category of art creation, but also a vehicle for human beings to observe themselves and express their identity and emotions.
For thousands of years, under this ancient and classic theme, countless artists have depicted portraits to explore the other, to introspect themselves, to understand the relationship between people, and even to understand the “human being”. However, with the development of science and technology, the medium, technique and language of art have changed dramatically compared to the traditional ones, and our perception of the “self” has also changed dramatically. Nowadays, portrait art is no longer just a reproduction of a person’s appearance, but also an exploration of the inner world, or even a kind of transcendental abstraction.
In the upcoming Spring 2025 exhibition, Yugusha has invited fourteen Chinese and international artists to interpret the new perception of “portrait” from fourteen rebellious and reflective perspectives. In a sense, this is even an exhibition of anti-portrait portraits.
