Awakening
XIE Qun
Group Exhibition, XZ Space, Beijing
Signifying the seasonal awakening of insects, Jingzhe marks the transition from winter’s lingering chill to the nascent warmth of spring. As nature stirs in response to shifting rhythms, this moment of resurgence extends beyond the biological to the psychological and the conscious. Inspired by Jingzhe, the participating artists embrace both new experimentation and the reworking of the old, responding to the present through impermanence and serendipity. Their practice is not confined by formal constraints but emerges from a sincere interplay between external influences and internal sensibilities.
Spring thunder rolls, rousing all creatures. A dark eagle perches upon a spacecraft, a green dragon guards around the city walls. Energy circulates, dawn rises, and all things come into being. In the tension between confinement and growth, wild grass finds new vitality. Sharp thorns and delicate flowers grow side by side, awaiting their moment—chrysalis to butterfly. Even when long removed from their native landscapes, bodies retain an instinctive attunement to nature. When the body and mind bear wounds, it is also an opening—a moment to tend to the physical self and turn inward in reflection. As the fog lifts, innate wisdom reawakens, rekindling a love for life. From discarded fragments, the young conjure deities, breathing life into visions of spring’s renewal. In the vastness of nature, the elderly, with undiminished wonder, continue to carve forests and lakes, tracing the cycles of winter’s retreat and spring’s return.
