Guo Longyao: The Flower

The vitality contained in “Flowers” is like the perception of young people, permeated with an ideal, diversified and fluttering quality. The apricot blossoms in his paintings always appear as a whole, occasionally the petals at the edges jump and splash to the side, but eventually they will be brought back together again by the composition and return to the center of the vision, continuing to appear as a whole. There are very few dark parts in his paintings, and the shade of the apricot blossoms is often the only dark part of the picture; the translucent shadows either merge with the apricot blossoms or become one with the ground, and in any case can’t be separated out separately. These dark parts are often covered by the light parts of the subject matter, showing only a little to indicate their volume.
