HE Wei | Primary Colour
Solo Exhibition, C-Space, Beijing
He Wei’s paintings are scarred and weathered, unsettling as well as beautiful. Their energy is explosive but that power is never left alone to futile destruction. Strange geometry, almost sentient, stands in hostile ambiguous space like sentries watching and ordering life as the millennia pass by. There is a strange harmony between the elements of space, time, and consciousness in his work. In the end it is all balanced and purposeful. “I try to convey spiritual and psychological states of mind through color and the process of applying paint in many thin translucent layers,” He Wei states.
In this new body of work, Primary Colour, He Wei has pushed the limits of color into mind altering psychedelic regions of exploration. A sugar rush of voluptuous color bombards the eye with sensations that transcend comprehension. The wild textural field further agitates the color combinations. The painting has the presence of a living entity as strong and memorable as any singular iconic image even though it is impossible to identify exactly what it is. The textures and neon colors from icy glowing radioactive blue to searing pinks and yellows that are dangerously close to inflicting harm are held in check by his meticulously researched solid geometric forms and lines. These abstract ‘symbols’ have an authoritative calming effect as they stabilize the surrounding chaos. Through the painting process utilizing randomness and order He Wei seeks balance and understanding within himself and on the canvas.
